VNU cancels 2007 Incentive Show; replaces it with the Virtual Incentive Show
New York-based VNU Business Media has cancelled the 2007 Incentive Show, scheduled to run May 1-2, 2007, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York, and will replace it with the Virtual Incentive Show, which will most likely include a virtual trade show and a series of webinars.

“Our research shows that buyers have limited time to attend trade shows, and we're excited to announce that we now have the capability to bring the trade show to their desks,” says Jackie Augustine, Group Publisher.

The Incentive Show, produced by VNU Expositions and presented by Incentive, Potentials and Sales & Marketing Management magazines, was founded 71 years ago in 1935. Buyers were able to preview new merchandise, travel destinations, rewards, gift certificates, debit cards and new products in the incentives marketplace.

VNU Business Media produces 70 annual events and conferences, 65 trade shows, 42 business publications and 17 directories in the entertainment, media, marketing, healthcare, retail, travel, professional performance and real estate and design industries.

Want to hear a story? Turn on the radio
When you run a non-profit radio drama show, getting a free slab of spoiled meat is actually a good thing.

"You can punch it and slap it and kick it and it sounds great," said 22-year-old Lucus Keppel, a graduate student in charge of "The Central Audio Theatre," a program produced by Central Michigan University students, faculty and local community members that is now in its second season.

The season premiered Wednesday with the evening of broadcast of "Molly Mevster: The Alchemist Murders," a mystery about a college professor’s many dilemmas written by someone in the know, cinematic arts faculty member Will Anderson. One of ten half-hour vocal vignettes playing between now and December, "Molly Mevster" plays again Oct. 5 on WMHW Modern Rock 91.5, CMU’s student-run radio station. Like all the episodes, it is also broadcast online and available for download.

The idea of audio theater conjures the image of families in the early 20th century huddled around huge radios. Radio’s golden age is long gone, but with the rise of Internet downloads and satellite radio, and the cultivation of niche markets online, radio dramas are finding an audience again.

"We all can create our own environment when we listen to radio," said Keppel, who started the audio theater program with ten episodes last year. "When you watch TV, everyone is given the same picture, there’s much less imagination involved; you’re kind of shackled."

Keppel is a student of broadcasting, and will graduate with his master’s degree in May. He plans to pursue a career in radio news, but he’s always had a thing for theater – especially the kind that doesn’t require costumes. Recorded stand-up comedy and shows like "Prairie Home Companion" have always turned his ears. He started "Central Audio Theatre" so he could turn somebody else’s.

So far, he has. Keppel counted 10,000 total downloads from the show’s first season.
"

Audio theater is often considered a blind medium, ’cause you can’t see anything," he said "But I look at it as being a blank canvas – everything we add to it brings it out a little further – rather than its being handicapped in some manner."

Each half-hour show, which features a different mix of 36 cast members, can take up to 14 hours to rehearse, record, edit and produce. It’s nice not to have to worry about costumes, sets and other visuals, Keppel said. Some actors used to theater have to adjust their methods, learning to read the drama right off the page and not to project too much.

Keppel directed most of the episodes himself last year, but for the second season, three undergraduates signed on to help with the theatrical broadcasts. Most are comedies and mysteries, genres that tend to work well on the radio. Most of the scripts are donated by authors local and national and some have played on the radio before – "just not in this area," Keppel said.

Keppel’s creation is not CMU’s first foray into radio drama; the university aired one hour-long drama in 2000. But it is the one with the most promise. Officials in the broadcasting department are already thinking about programming after Keppel graduates next year.
"I’d love it to keep going. It really has become kind of my baby."

Most of the sound effects, which are added in after the actors have had their say, are pre-recorded. But Keppel and his collaborators like to get creative. Today, a slab of meat. Tomorrow, perhaps, a collection of shoes for all those tricky footsteps effects.

Luckily, the meat is shrink-wrapped, he said. But listeners shouldn’t think about all that.

"Radio is meant for things you can imagine," Keppel said.

A podcast of each episode will be available for download at http://feeds.feedburner.com/centralaudio
